Quilt Top Tutorial - Log Cabin Sawtooth Star

(aka - The Sunshine Quilt!)

This quilt top combines my two favorite traditional quilt blocks - the log cabin, and the sawtooth star - into one giant log cabin star! The measurements in the tutorial are for a finished quilt of about 60” square, but you can size up or down if needed!

This is a very bare-bones tutorial, with a few infographics. I am happy to answer any questions if you need clarification or elaboration! :)

This tutorial does assume you have a basic understanding of sewing on a machine. It is a simple tutorial and does not delve into the fundamentals of sewing or quilting.

Recommended Supplies and Equipment:

Fabric (Quantities below!)

Sewing Machine + Thread

Scissors or a Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat

Ruler

Step 1: Cut all of your pieces out!

For a throw size quilt that is approximately 60” x 60”, I used 2.75” wide strips. Once sewn, with a 1/4” seam allowance, the strips on the quilt top will be 2.25”!

Fabric Quantities: You will need roughly 2 square yards of yellow, 2 square yards of white. This is a slight over-estimation to account for scrap/off cuts!

(If using various shades of yellow, you will just need 2 total square yards of all shades combined! Or whatever color you're working with!)

Measurements and quantities of yellow + white strips of fabric. These measurements include 1/4" seam allowance!

You will also need a few very long strips of white to go around the edges of the quilt top once the star is complete! Think four trips of 2.75” x 65”!

Step 2: Make all of your Log Cabin blocks!

Log cabin blocks are a very simple block to make! Simply start with your two small squares, and attach one strip at a time, going in a clockwise rotation around the starting two squares. This graphic is for the “Half Square Triangle” log cabin. You will need 8 of these blocks!

Follow the same steps 4 times with all yellow strips, and 4 more times with all white strips!

Step 3: Make the star!

Combine the log cabin blocks just like you would a traditional sawtooth star!

Step 4: Finish the top!

Using the long strips of white, create a border around the whole star! Trim the ends as needed.

Yay! You’re done!

Your finished quilt top should look something like this! If you decide to follow this tutorial, I'd love to see your work! Use #thesunshinequilt for any work you post on instagram!
